Pancake Rocks
We stopped in Hokitika for lunch and supplies...
and in the centre was a statue to the pioneers...
...and a clock tower. The rail bridge which used to be shared with th main road but traffic has increased so much, thy built a dedicated road bridge.
Another rail bridge although this line is for freight only to take some of the minerals and coal mined in the area.
Route No 6 is one of the most scenic drives in the country with crashing waves,
Rocks and islands in the sea and there were whales and dolphins out at sea...
...and towering cliffs.
Then we stopped at the Pancake Rocks where there are curious layers of limestone.
The Nikau palm, native to New Zealand and at its southern most extremity.
More dramatic cliffs..
Some pancake rocks.
The sea has cut through the base to crate an arch.
Some of the cliffs.
These are just like our fuchsias at home but grow to 14 metres.
