Greymouth to Christchurch by train
I couldn't take photos from both sides of the train as the sun was often in the wrong place or I was looking the other way so here re photos of the scenery from the other side of the train on the return Journey.
The same boat on Lake Brunner that we had seen on the outward journey although it had drifted on its moorings. The last timber mill n=by the railway. There used to be 20 in as many kilometres.
A view across the Crooked River which flows into Lake Brunner.
The well preserved station warehouse at Moana.
A detail of the station, the only one of its type still in existence.
Looking back as we left.
Farmland.
The hills creeping in towards us.
And then we were into the mountains near Inchbonnie.
Looking up the valley.
Looking across the valley.
More scenery.
Jacksons, a former railhead whilst they built the Otira Tunnel that took 23 years.
A recent landslip on the far side of the river.
A road bridge over the river.
A braided section of river.
Alpine scenery.
Looking down to the Waimakariri River...
...still in Alpine scenery...
...but we soon drop below the tree line...
...passing alongside a deep gorge...
...finally into the foothills...
...a curved bridge across a tributary...
...the mouth of the gorge...
...and back to the Canterbury Plains.
The shadow cast by a bridge as we crossed....finally into the foothills...
...a curved bridge across a tributary...
...the mouth of the gorge...
...and back to the Canterbury Plains.
