We parked and walked around the corner to a bridge overlooking a gorge with the Huka Falls.

They get very close and very wet.

Beyond is the city of Taupo on the horse of Lake Taupo, the flooded crater of a super volcano crater...

...and it is vast, located in the centre of the north island.
