Like Matheson and Frans Josef Glacier

Lake Matheson and Frans Josef Glacier

The river running past the lake.
Lake matheson.
A Blue Mushroom.

Peters Kettle Lake in the valley below the Frans Josef Glacier.
the river draining Frans Josef Glacier.
A waterfall cascading down the side of the valley.
The river draining melt water from the glacier which is partially obscured by clouds in the valley in the centre of the picture.
As my heli hike was cancelled due to bad weather, I trekked up the Tatare Tunnels Trail.
It was steep and narrow in places.
About to enter the 500 metres of tunnels carved out of the solid rock to divert water to be able to operate a sluice in the Waito River Valley to liberate the gold flecks from the river terraces.
A view back towards the entrance.
The remains of a sluice box.
Another steep path.
After the Tatare Tunnels, I walked up Callers Gorge to cross the bridge....
...and see a waterfall.
Back in Frans Josef, I stopped off at the local church...
...a pretty 19th century wooden construction...
...inside with a window behind the altar just like at the Church of the Good Shepherd...

...and a view out of the window of the bridge, although if you are sitting in the pews, you just get the view of the mountains and the bridge is obscured from view.
