Auckland New Zealand
After more than three weeks touring New Zealand, with many roads following the same valleys as railway tracks, I had only seen a commuter train in Wellington but on my way into Auckland, I saw my first freight train. I had heard several loving at night but had never actually seen one.
A freight train although I missed the locomotive, just a glimpse to confirm that it was operated by Kiwi Rail.I went to the main station built on reclaimed land that was formerly part of the inner harbour in 1910 to buy a ticket from Auckland to Wellington but they only sell commuter tickets, I was redirected to the isite located in the Sky Tower which isn't a railway station but they are a private commercial ticket company that sell long distance train tickets, theatre tickets, tours, bungee jumping and just about anything else that requires a ticket and a booking.
The Ferry Building down by the docks.
Another old building in central Auckland.
The iconic Sky Tower in Sky City, from which adrenalin junkies can bungee jump from near the top. There are great views of the cityscape from the viewing platform. There are several restaurants to choose from and judging by the crowds, it is a popular place. It is prettily lit up at night and from it.
The cathedral.
Toi o Tamaki, or Auckland Art Gallery. The entrance is past two sculptured kauri columns carved by expert Maori artists and features both European and Maori art.
An interesting art nouveau style building.
