Christchurch to Picton by train on the Coastal Pacific by KiwiRail
The locomotive that is going to pull us all the way to Picton at the top of the South IslandAnother picture of the same loco with the carriages attached.
We were treated to a brilliant sunrise as we passed through flat farmland.
A former railway cottage, used to house workers in remote areas.
The Ethelton Gorge. The road bridge over the same river.
Foothills.
Forested mountains.
The Pacific coast which we follow for 108 kilometres.
A view of the beach where we saw whales and dolphins out at sea, plus sea lions, fur seals and penguins on the beach.
A few scattered islands.
More beach which has been uplifted by the 2016 Kaikoura earthquake by six metres.
The grass area was the beach and has been reclaimed by grasses.
The bank in the middle just north of the pond is one of the fault lines
A plane taking off from a grass strip next to the railway,
More scenery.
Lake Grasmere...
...which is a flooded estuary where sun and wind evaporates the sea water leaving salt.
The vine growing area of Marlborough
The airfield at Picton...
...the wetlands outside Picton.
Looking across the valley to the road on the far side as we descend into Picton.
