Pergamon

 Pergamon

Pergamon and yet another ruin to see after yesterday's Temple of Athena.

We took the cable car to the top of the mountain. The views back to the town are spectacular. There are many ruins on the hillside and down in the town. The main attraction is on the top of the hill.

There are a few buildings still standing.
There are a few walls of a sanctuary still standing.
The main attraction is the ampitheatre. It is the steepest in the Roman world. At its steepest, it lies at an angle of 50 degrees.
It is had to capture the steepness on camera, but I had a go...
...and another view.
The lower entrance to the sanctuary of Trajan...
...all that is left standing of the columns...
...and this is what it used to look like with the lower entrance depicted by a row of arches at the bottom of the drawing and the acropolis in the centre.

Aview from the top of the hill of the lake with a fish farm in the centre of the photo...

...by a earth and clay core dam just above the base cable car station and the city far below.
