Canakkale

 Canakkale

I will finish writing this up when I have that happy moment of time, power and internet. These are pictures of the miitary museum, the outer and inner stone fortress, the submarine that visitors enter, The Troy Horse and a lifesize diorama of some trenches on the seafront at Eceabat.

I took the ferry from Eceabat to Cannakkale. allegedly the best place to live in Turkey. I planned to visit the Naval Military Museum, the Fortress and the Troy Horse.

One of the barrels of the giant guns used to defend the narrowest part of the Dardanelles just metres from where it was originally installed.
A mine sweeper drone towed behind a ship to cut the cables of mines.
The remains of a submarine.

An anti aircarft gun.
A whole series of mines...
...one with a cut away section to show the workings...
...more mines.
Another section of a recovered submarine.
Just one of many guns...
...a gun carriage without the gun barrel.
The entrance to the main fortress.
The inner opening of the main gate, after a 90 degree turn inside to foil attackers.
There were more guns inside.
The entrance to the inner fortress.
All more guns...
...a howizter.
One of several ramps to get guns up to the top firing platform. ..
...another view of a ramp.
A view of the inner fortress.
Inside were several exhibitions, dioramas, cabinets of guns, uniforms, medals and paraphenalia but the lighting was poor for my camera but this pictures gives an idea.
A gun barrel made by Armstrongs of Newcastle. I have seen these all over the world so they must have been a major supplier to all the world's armies in the 19th century.
A torpedo lauching devide.
Torpedoes.
The battery tht housed the massive guns to defend the Dardeanells.
The submarine...
...a more distant view.
The conning tower.
Inside, the forward torpedo firing room...
...the gallery...
...the mess...
...another gun...
A periscope, American made, sold to the Turks in 1970 and used to patrol the coast of Cyprus.
Various views of the Troy Horse...
...and another...
...its such a popular place to have a selfie or group photo that you only get a full view first thing in the morning.
A statue to teh fallen at Eceabat harbour.
A 3D map of Gallipoli...
...a trench diorama on the seafront...
...ANZAC trenches...
...the popies are real but the trenches are closer than in real life.
