 Kiwis and Kakapos

The cover of my next book to be published, featuring a giant, flightless, burrowing parrot standing two thirds of a metre high and highly endangered with just 249 individuals left alive in highly protected designated islands.

The book is the story of a trip around New Zealand investigating its flora and fauna, the development of the railways, Milford Sound and experiencing some of its fantasticate scenery.

Churches near Chichester

 Churches near Chichester

It was a lovely summer's day and I went for a ride to see some churches near Chichester, starting at the harbour at the city end of the canal.

Overlooking the harbour.
The canal trust building and cafe.
We left the city centre and cycled along the Centurion Way, a former railway track linking Chichester and Midhurst, some of which has been converted to a cycle path. An art installation at the side of the track.
Our first church, the Saxon church of St Andrew's in West Dean,, the west entrance.
...the south side...
...one of West Dean Collae buildings overlooking the church yard, made largely of flint.
The Blessed Virgin Mary church in Singleton although it was locked.
The Baptist chapel in East Dean.
All Saints in East Dean...

...looking at the altar.

St Mary the Virgin near Upwaltham surrounded by fields...
...the south side of the church...
...looking at the altar...
...a plague to the aircrew of two American bombers that crashed nearby during the Second World War.
St Margarets in Eartham...

...looking up the aisle.

Next was St Mary's in Slindon...
...the insides, a much later church, taller and wider than the earlier medieval churches and built in stane rather than local flint.
Another St Mary's, this time in Walberton...
...and the other side.

St George's in Eastergate,,,with most of it covered in pebbledash...

...but underneath there is plenty of flint...
...the organ and altar...
...and just outside is a lovely old granary built on staddles, the mush room shaped stones to keep vermin out of the store.
Yet another St Mary the Virgin at Aldingbourne...
...a large church...
...with a tree stump cut to mimic a chair...
...and a war memorial in the graveyard.

Our last church, St Andrew's at Oving.
