El Camino Portuguese Golega to Tomar

El Camino Portuguese

Golega to Tomar

One of the locals dressed in traditional costume...not very communicative.
The ancient bridge at San Caetano with a view of the Tejo in the background and after six days, this is the last glimpse of the river as the route takes off into the hills.

Another tradition of El Camino...to bring a piece of rock from home to place at the end of your spiritual journey but  many people pick a local piece of rock to place on top of one of the concrete way markers.
A hazard of planting eucalyptus as a fast growing timber crop, it sheds a lot of leaves and the bark of the trees continually sheds long slivers of bark, creating a lot of combustible litter to add to a fire.
The Templar Castle at Tomar.
The name of the city with the 'o' of Tomar shown as a Templar Cross which was repeated in many of the pavements of the city.
A statue of Gualdim Pais in Placa de Republica who established Tomar as the centre of the Order of Templars in Portugal in the 12th century.
The Sao Joao Baptista built in Manueline style with a typical Octagonal bell tower which would become a hallmark of Templar architecture as it was a reference to the octagonal shape of the Temple Mount in Jerusalem.
