Art Nouveau in Ålesund

Art Nouveau in Ålesund

In 1904, the centre was largely made of wood and a large fire started and spread rapidly out of control. Over 850 houses were destroyed, leaving only 230 in the centre. There was a strong wind which fanned the flames and as the heat intesified, the amount of radiate heat increased and a rain of sparks and embers spread the fire.

People were told to evacuate and go anywhere. Many escaped with nothing. There was only one casualty, an old lady who went back into her house to get her purse.

The town centre had to be rebuilt and the latest architectural fashion was chosen, Art Nouveau (Jugenstilsenteret).

Just a selection of some of the buildings that caught my eye all within 15 minutes of the harbour but there are plenty of others to see. The three masted schooner is also there as you don't see many.
