Road from Caye Caulker to Belmopan, Tuesday 22nd September

Seb had left the previous afternoon to go back to Belize City and on to the northern border to stay at Corozal in order to be at the border at 8am to pick up the necessary permits to allow Betsy to be driven south to meet us. We were due to take the 10.30 water taxi from Caye Caulker to meet the bus at 11.30.

At around 10.15am just before we were due to go to the water taxi, Seb had still not set off so we delayed our departure until the next water taxi at 12 midday and we still hadn't heard from Seb so we opted to delay our departure yet again to 1.30pm and we took the water taxi still without hearing from Seb. We had arrived at Belize City at 2.30pm when we got a text from Seb to say that he had finally got the permits and was setting off.

Meanwhile I took my last photos on Caye Caulker.

It would take two hours to drive to Belize City so we had some spare time. So I had time to be a tourist in Belize City. I passed the Taiwan embassy en route to the Fort George lighthouse and the tomb of Baron Viktor Bliss who was a generous benefactor to the people of Belize although he died on board a British ship moored offshore and never actually set foot on the land.

Next was the swing bridge built in 1926 in Liverpool and the only working example of this type of bridge in the world. The Court House was a magnificent colonial structure, opposite Broodies, a local department store, followed by Government House opposite the Anglican cathedral built with bricks from England used as ships ballast which is also the oldest Anglican cathedral in the Americas.

We were relieved to see Betsy and Seb and we loaded our bags and set off. Part of the fun of overland travelling is the journey but there was just an hour of daylight and the rest of the journey was undertaken in the dark. It was after 8pm when we turned off the road after passing through Belmopan and bumped along a rough gravel road for 12kms to reach our Equestrian Riding Trails lodge.

We sat down to a meal of curried chicken and crashed out in our cabanas.
