Palenque, Tuesday 15th September

My little hut was a delight but being roofed with palm fronds, it did emphasis the sound of the rain inside the hut. Also it is porous, good enough to keep the rain out but spiders and lizards live amongst the thatch. Whenever you put the light on, insects and lizards would scurry up the walls back to the safety of the frond roof.

I was a five minute drive up the road to see the ruins of Palenque. These are spectacular yet only a small handful of the 1,600 buildings on site have been excavated and restored leaving more than 90% to be excavated.

It was hot and humid so the pool was very inviting. However that afternoon it rained again and so we huddled under the palm frond roofs or in the campsite restaurant and chatted whilst we waited for the storm to pass by with the occasional dip in the pool.

Even had I camped it would not have been too bad as there were shelters such as this tent put up under a palm frond shelter,
