Kaunas, the second city in Lithuania

Kaunas, the second city in Lithuania

It was also the capital in between the two world wars as Poland invaded and annexed eastern Lithuania so they had to move the capital. It is the European Capital of Culture for 2022.

I spent my first day walking around the new part of town. It experienced a building boom at the start of the 20th century and there are a lot of Art Deco style buildings.

A restaurant along Liaises.
The Basilica of St Michael.
A restored block of flats with shops at ground level.
A wonderful example...
...and another...
...a mural on the side of one of the buildings.
More.
A detail of the pediment.
A grand brick built building from the 19th century. now a hotel.
And the annex.
The entrance on the corner with balconies and a tower.
Not all the buildings have survived unaltered. The roof has had an extension added and the ground floor has been repurposed for modern retail units but the middle storey has been faithfully restored.

And at a street corner next to a lamp post, a random tiny statue.
