Mascot Creek

Friday 3rd July

At Fort Selkirk it rained overnight which helped the fire fighters control the forest fire but it made for a wet day and a wet camp that evening and it rained the next day as well.

But a drop of rain didn't get us down with Bob playing a few tunes and I had another opportunity for gold panning.

On one of these rainy days I was looking out for wild life and convinced that every tree stump ot other dark form on the shore was a bear or an elk. It was one of those moments that the first canoe had passed what looked like just another tree stump and being in the second canoe, had it been wildlife surely the first canoe would have spotted it...so I pointed and remarked that it really did look like a moose at which point it moved and a mother moose and her two calves got up and walked into the bush to disappear. It was our first moose sighting and so unexpected that no one got a photo...besides which being wet it wouldn't have been a good shot.

We camped at Langley Chute on a gravel bar where the rain finally eased off and Karen caught a good sized pike.

You know you are a Yukoner when....

...driving in winter is better as the snow fills in the potholes
...you put your coat on to go to the toilet
...it is socially acceptable to have shotguns mounted on your walls provided they are not loaded
