Lake Laberge 23rd - 24th June
Our first test was to cross Lake Laberge, a 53kms long alpine lake by sheer hard paddling as there was no current to help us and it is notorious for its cold water and bad weather. We stopped at Policeman's Point just before hitting the lake itself to ensure that we had our rain gear to hand as it had just started to rain.
It was here that by sheer luck I looked down in the water and picked up my first three flakes of gold.
We pulled in at Upper Laberge, an abandoned First Nation village, unfortunately infested by mosquitoes so no one wanted to stay long. The weather was getting worse as can be seen by the rain gear and the waves.
But after a short pause the weather improved, we had a change of crew and I teamed up with Julie, one of the two Canadian sisters on their first ever canoe trip. We set up camp on the shore that evening and ate around a cap fire made from driftwood. The sun doesn't set so much as disappear behind the mountains and even at past 11pm we were treated to a colourful sky with the sun still clearly visible above the horizon.
Looks like you're having a great time Norman - I'm pretty jealous (except for the mosquitoes and hard physical effort).
