East coast of Oman

 East coast of Oman.

After several consequtive days camping, I finally got power and internet connection again.

We stopped at Wadi Darbat where there are several waterfalls to see although being so small, they were more cascades than waterfalls.
Another waterfall.

Further up stream.

A cave on the slopes above the waterfalls.
Wildlife.

Further upstream before the water seeps away underground and becomes a trickle on the surface.
Lots of different wildlife around the river.
The huge Taiq Sinkhole.
Looking over the edge.

On our way back to the coast road, we stopped at Jabal Hawkab, a lookout point where the inland plateau falls away to the coastal plin and the sea.

Looking out to the sea.

Just up the coast is the Mirbat Castle and whee thr Battle of Mirbat was successfully fought in 1971 agaist overwhelming numbers of insurgents and where two Victoria Cross Medals were awarded for bravery.

Some of the exhibits inside the castle...

...and more...
...looking out across the bay...
...and looking inland to another fortified position...

...and a fortified merchants house in the town...
...and another merchant's house...
...and the former market...

...and looking through one of the deserted houses.
We returned to the coastal road which hugs the coast...
...until it turns inland.
A petrified waterfall where the plateau reaches the coastal plain...
...a close up of the petrified waterfall.
A couple of views of the plateau...

...before we descend back to the coast and our bushcamp, overlooking a quiet bay until the local fishing fleet turned up.

In the morning, we stopped at the Roc Garden, a collection of oddly weathered rocks which resemble all sorts of things...

...and odd geometric shapes that are unusual in nature...
...camel heads...

...and mushroom rocks...

...and fishing boats pulled up on the beach.

A brilliant sunset overlooking our bush camp...
...before moving on to Sur with its suspension bridge...
...fortifications...
...port...

...and dhow museum and boatyard...

...keeping traditional boat uilding skills alive...
...by building ships...
...in the traditional manner...
...and doing repair work.
Wadi Shab.
A long walk up the wadi...
...up a gorge...
...where water is captured for irrigation...
...and opportunities for a swim...
...in clear waters...
...and beyond the entrance to the gorge...
...on the coastal plain is the Bimmah Sinkhole in the Hawiyat Najm Park, meaning Falling Star park, as legend has it that a star fell to earth and made the sinkhole.
