Transfer from Lake Toba to Ecolodge

Transfer from Lake Toba to Ecolodge

It was going to be a long drive day to get from Lake Toba up to the north of Sumatra to reach our ecolodge in a national park on the hope of seeing some urangutangs. It had been raining for most of the night. The rain had stopped but the wind still blew strongly.

We planned to be picked up by boat from the harbour at the hotel to be taken back to the mainland. We brought our luggage down to breakfast so that we would be ready for our ferry. We were having breakfast when we got the news. Our ferry was cancelled as the water was too rough. We had a quick change to Plan B. We didn't have a Plan B so it was all made up on the spur of the moment.

The small ferries were cancelled but the larger vehicle carrying ferries were still running. We just had to reach port for the next sailing. It was a mad dash along the coast to the port. Being a larger boat, it was unaffected by the stronger waves, the swell and the wind.

It arrived on time and disgorged its vehicles. The vehicles leaving the island and the passengers were loaded on at 8.30am. It left at 8.45 to make the crossing to Parapat.
A ferry ahead of us.

A sister ferry of the one that we were travelling on as we came into port. It was a long drive back past Medan to our ecolodge at Bukit Lawang.
