Homestay Indonesia

 Homestay Indonesia

We passed through an area of tea gardens for as far as the eye could see.
It was a bank holiday so everybody was out to enjoy some extra free time. Every tea garden seemed to have erected a tent and was serving food and drink to passerbys. Much of the drink on offer was tea but they also grow some coffee in the area with coffee plantation walks on offer...and of course the opportunity to taste some.
A  view of the lake...
...and another through the window of the bus. It was a long and very twisting road that we took to get down to the port on the lake.
We arrived in time to get our tickets and a short wait for the next departure. It was a passenger ferry but it took motorbikes and scooters as well. The boat was moored bow onto the jetty. There was a wooden plank to get bikes on board so they were rolled up the plank, across the flat bow deck and down onto the bottom deck f=of the boat.
One bike had a top box and wouldn't fit through the doorway. It was strapped to one side of the passenger gangway along the port side, totally blocking access for passengers.
Larger road vehicles took a roll on roll off ferry. We were leaving just as a large ferry was coming into port. With the port side blocked, all the passengers had to walk down the starboard side to access the steps up to the passenger deck above the bike deck.
We were met by our local guide Lenti and a driver, introduced as Papanadouri. She had to ask his name and apologise to be able to introduce him. Their custom here is to respect elders, ask their clan and address them by their title. Hence she didn't know his name.
It was a long drive to reach our home stay but it was worth it when we arrived. These are the views of the traditional style of houses built by the local Batak people. The main house...
...the guest house dining room...
...a detail of a plant...egg shells sitting on the end of spikes on a plant...
...guest rooms under the guest kitchen...
...guest rooms under the main house...
...a church down the valley...
...a view across th valley from the homestay...
...one of a pair of figures to ward off evil spirits....

A tomb of a local important person.
