From Roatan via Lake Yojoa to Leon in Nicaragua, Wednesday & Thursday, 14th & 15th October

The next morning we flew back to the mainland from Roatan via the even smaller island of Utila and set off on the road towards Lake Yojoa which is the largest lake in Honduras at 79 sq kms at an elevation of 700m. Pictures of the river along which we walked to reach the lake itself.

We had been told that it was just a ten minute walk but was more like 45 minutes to reach it. It is home to over 375 species of animals but subject to the dangers of deforestation and over development so it is in danger.
Our destination for the evening was the D&D Brewery just a short distance from the lake.
It is a curious combination of brewery, lodge and restaurant set in its own grounds with a number of cabanas.

I embarrassed myself by falling asleep and falling off my chair and head butting the ground causing a head wound plus gravel rash to elbow and knee. The only photo of the incident with me being treated by three of the restaurant staff.
The next day was the long drive of more than 10 hours to reach Nicaragua through the hills and past Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras,

By passing Tegucigalpa we passed a landslide that blocked one carriage way of the main road and had damaged some houses,

We continued on our way reaching the border where leaving Honduras was relatively easy but getting through all the border checks, customs, medical checks and immigration into Nicaragua took nearly to hours,

It was dark when we left the border and luckily it was just a short drive to Leon to check into the Hotel Europa for two nights.
