Snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef
We were at Mission Beach harbour for a 9am departure. We were going snorkelling and diving on the Great Barrier Reef. It was one and a half hours from the harbour to reach Beaver Cay also known as Beaver Reef. The group inside the boat.
The view back towards the harbour as we set sail. It was a choppy journey and it rained for a lot of the morning from dawn onwards. But we were lucky and there were patches of blue sky and only intermittent rain as we arrived at our destination.
Beaver Cay. We had a great day diving and snorkelling, seeing all colours and shapes of corals, fish and sea cucumbers. We had a smashing buffet lunch on board and then an afternoon of more snorkelling and diving.
The reef isn't very deep so the views were similar whether you dived or snorkelled, the main difference was that by diving, you were seeing wildlife on the horizontal other than snorkelling which gives either a 45 degree view or from above. Snorkelers can dive to get a different view but the extra activity and movement may scare away some of the fish that you were diving to see.
