Bolshoy Zayatsky Island and St Andrews minor monastery

First a colourful photo of some nasturmiums.
Breakfast, Solovetsky style.
We took a ferry from the main island to Bolshoy Zayatsky Island to the south east of the archipelago. It it a windy desolate place with only tigra and tundra and no forest.

There is St Andrews skate or minor monastery, attached to the Solovetsky main monastery on the main island but this was a quiet retreat or for those wanted a more hermit like existence to get closer to god.
There are fourteen labyrinths on the island and no one is quite sure who built them or why, but they are interesting and fascinating patterns.

And then there are piles of stones called are sanctuaries. Some have bones and implements underneath but some are empty.
Another colourful picture of some red berries...?cow or cloud berries?
St Andrews church.

The church and the main building as we left the island.
Solovetsky monastery as we arrived back on the main island.
Me with the monastery in the background.

The Patriarch of Moscow and all Russ (old name for Russia), i.e. the head of the Orthodox church was expected any moment and we had a ring side seat.

Another important person was there, Oriel Orlov, governor of Archanslk.

The Patriarch himself although I only got his headdress.

The patriarch going up the stairs to the Church of the Transfiguration.
Taking the service.
The priests and other officials filing out of the church.
A bowl of pelmeni for a lat lunch.
Another quick visit to the maritime museum to see the exhibits and take a few photos. A model of the St Peter.
A photo during its reconstruction.
A traditional ship.
A detail of how they used tree roots to sew or hold the planks together. They swell in the water and become watertight.
A friendly pet bear in a local cafe.
My dinner, fish salad and bread.
