Tena to Banos

We left the lodge and stopped off in Tena for the cook groups to get food for the meals that they were going to cook. Then we set out on the long drive towards Banos. we were won heading out of lowland jungle into the highlands and the Andes. The valleys grew deeper and the slopes steeper as we got nearer to Banos.

We stopped at Camping Paraiso near Rio Verde, some 17kms short of Banos.it was a nice place set in woodland just off the main road. The photos weren't very good due to it being dusk but it gives an idea. This is Rita, one of the two resident cap dogs. The other was Mango who being a puppy was much more entertaining! (Just be careful about leaving your shoes outside your tent!)

Relaxing after a long drive day L to R Kim,  Shannon, Stu and Gareth.
The next day was a free day in Banos. Most people went back to bed after breakfast but Stu and Sonia went zip lining whilst Jane and I went canyoning.
Canyoning involved a lot of abseiling down waterfalls. zip lining across chasms, sliding down galleys and a whole lot of fun....and you needed a waterproof camera. I have picture taken by our guide, Darren, on a stick but it is not compatible with my Apple laptop so will have to wait until another time.

Meanwhile we looked around Banos with a few architectural photos that took my eye.

And wherever you looked there were green steep mountainsides crowding in around the town.

There were five tunnels on the main road between our cap site and Banos. After the fourth tunnel out of town we stopped the bus and got out at Rio Verde. There was a well renowned empanada maker in the town, called Mercedes and she seems to be in several guide books. We walked through the small settlement and found her cafe.It is something like a hand pie, like a Cornish pastie with a choice of fillings. We ordered four savoury fillings between just the two of us and they were all excellent.

After that we walked along the old road cut into he cliff face as opposed to the new road through the tunnels. We got some great views along the valley and of a waterfall.
