El Camino Portuguese
Pontevedra to Caldas de Reis
I was up early and out of the hotel by 8am and walking through the quiet and dark streets of Pontevedra. My hotel was 1.5 kilometres south of the centres I was walking this section for the third time in 24 hours and I had checked out the route over the bridge.
Despite seeing a range of way markers, I saw a new one painted on the wall but it followed a theme. The yellow arrow was there but there was a blue background and a yellow scallop shell painted on top. It was so neat that it had to have been done by stencil but it would also involve letting the blue paint dry before apply=ing the yellow. The railway line out of town over which pilgrims have to cross.
A pleasant shaded path curtsey of the local farmers grapes being grown on poles and wires over the path.
Some independence graffiti on a concrete electricity pylon.
I had seen a few wind turbines in Portugal but they are everywhere in Spain.
The view up river from the old bridge crossing the Rio Umia in Caldas de Reis and the left of the weir is a watermill.
The local parish church dedicated to San Tome Becket, better known to us as Thomas a Becket who defied King Henry and was murdered at his alter in Canterbury in 1170.
Nothing special but an interesting merchants house in the centre of Caldas de Reis.
